Thunderbirds Are
"Go!"

This is one of those projects that
make you proud to be a carbon-based biped!
Earthrace is the brainchild
of a New Zealand couple who wanted to prove that it was possible to build an
eco-friendly vessel that could out-perform the gas-guzzlers, and prove it they
did, breaking the record for circumnavigating the globe in a powerboat.
The vessel cost around $3 million,
much of which came from the skipper and his wife who first mortgaged their home
and then borrowed another $750,000 from family, friends and anyone else who
could be persuaded to help.
What makes it such an inspiring
concept is that it's powered by 100% renewable energy and has a net zero
carbon footprint ... no pollution.
It's made from hemp composite and
recycled materials, including plastic ice cream containers that local schools
collected for the project!
"Earthrace is a 24m
(78ft) tri-hull wave piercing jet boat that has been designed and built
specifically to break the record for a powerboat to circumnavigate the globe.
It is an advanced endurance vessel, capable of submarining up to 7m (23ft)
underwater as it powers across oceans.
"The 24,000 nautical mile
voyage which started in Sagunto, Spain took 60 days, 23 hours and 49 minutes,
and was completed on 100% renewable biodiesel fuel."
Earthrace can travel 13,000
nautical miles on a full tank of fuel -- of course, to get this economy, she can
only travel at around 6 knots ... not terribly practical ... but it just goes to
show what can be achieved.

Does this look like something
from the set of Thunderbirds or what? |

Definitely a bit of a ring-in
among the usual boats we see at the Redcliffe Jetty |
