Redcliffe Waterfront Walkways

This is the way I walk every time I go to the shops or to the library or to coffee with friends. So come on, join me for a walk along the waterfront and a coffee ...

Sutton's Beach

We'll start here at Sutton's Beach (that's just at the bottom of our street). Yes, I know there aren't many waves ... that's because Moreton Island protects us from the worst of the weather. The red squat building on the point is our Surf Club ... now don't be rude ... I've already said there aren't many waves.

Looking back along the walkway to Brisbane's Fisherman's Island ... You can walk another 7 km this way all along the waterfront until you come to the bridge that connects our Peninsula to the "mainland." (Actually, we really are connected, but it's a long drive around if there's a major accident and we can't use the bridge ... that's why the government is building us a shiny new bridge ... soon ... one day ... not long now ...)

SBeach2.jpg (33799 bytes)

The first coffee place is just behind us ... but that's too close to stop ... not enough exercise! Keep walking ...

Sbeach3.jpg (51251 bytes)

Local fishermen bring their boats to the beach when the mullet season is on, and you can see one of them below. They have lookouts all along the coast to tell them when the fish are heading this way.

We've stopped to chat some mornings, and the fellows tell us they can recognise the signs of the schools approaching from some way off. This gives them time to row out and set their nets.

Winter is mullet season, and for some reason, the fish like coming to this particular little inlet. You'd think they'd have learnt what happens by now!

Sbeach4.jpg (22208 bytes)

Looking back along the way we've walked ... It's not far at all, is it?

Sbeach5.jpg (43122 bytes)

This is part of the amphitheatre (looking back towards Fisherman's Island). Local schools perform Greek tragedies here, various groups hold musical performances and the kids play basketball on the courts marked out. There was some talk at one stage of holding a Sunset Opera here, which I think is  a brilliant idea.

Sbeach7.jpg (51444 bytes)

Here we are at "my" lagoon ...

walk2.jpg (36915 bytes)

This is where we're going ... around to Redcliffe. This is the Jetty and you can just see the Whale Watch boat at the end of the Jetty. We get whales every winter on their way to and from the Great Barrier Reef for their winter hols.

walk4.jpg (55939 bytes)

Here we are, looking down to the Jetty from the footpath in the main street. The shops are on one side of the road and this is on the other!

walk7.jpg (31690 bytes)

We've just turned around from where we were standing in the last photo, and here's the crossing to get to our choice of coffee places. But before we stop, let's go a little further ...

walk8.jpg (76118 bytes)

Here's our Whale Watching boat ...

walk9.jpg (27056 bytes)

We can continue our walk for another 7 km around the water to Scarborough ...

What's that?

You've had enough?

All right then, here we are looking back at the Jetty ...

walk10.jpg (58115 bytes)

We can cross over here and find somewhere to sit and have our coffee now. We'll just watch the world go by for a while ...

walk11.jpg (41854 bytes)

Like what you've seen?

Then why not come over for an extended visit or a working holiday? Find out if you're eligible for a visa now ...
