Redcliffe Peninsula

by Jennifer Stewart

A beautiful place to live!

(photo and map courtesy Redcliffe City Council site)

Not many people outside Queensland know that the original choice for settlement was on the Redcliffe Peninsula - the site was rejected in favour of the present site of Brisbane, and has remained a bit of a secret ever since.

Redcliffe is only 32 km north of the city and is accessible via the Gateway Arterial (take the Deagon Deviation) and Bruce Highway (turn off at the Redcliffe or Deception Bay exits). This is a far cry from the early days, when visitors had to make a four hour coach trip or three hour voyage by boat.

School holidays see an influx of visitors, wetting a line along the old Hornibrook Bridge, which was retained for pedestrians when the "new" bridge was built.

Fishing is also a popular pastime along the beach at Margate and many regulars have themselves very comfortably set up, with chairs, rod holders, eskies and so on.

See the Redcliffe Lagoon

Redcliffe itself is becoming more and more popular with visitors streaming in every weekend to enjoy the cafés and views. (Click on the thumbnails for larger photos.)

Enjoying the view ... and the cars! Watching the yacht race Early morning swim at the lagoon!
With 22 kilometres of foreshore (nearly all of which has public access), there's plenty of room for everyone.

On the northern-most tip of the Peninsula, Scarborough has Deception Bay and the Newport canal estate on one side and Moreton Bay on the other. Locals say that there are two types of people who go boating on Deception Bay: those who've been caught on a sand bar and those who lie! The waters out near Moreton Island are crystal clear and ideal for fishing and diving.

The fishing fleet is based in Scarborough and supplies local, national and international outlets with delicious seafood. A trip to the Peninsula isn't complete without at least one serve of fish and chips! Morgan's is the popular choice for many - either relaxing on the deck watching the pelicans being fed, sitting at one of the shady tables at the take-away and feeding the seagulls or being entertained at the Teppanyaki grill.

A visit to Morgan's on Christmas Eve is an entertainment in itself, with customers lining up from 6 a.m. Musicians entertain those waiting and staff hand out free refreshments.

For more on what the Peninsula has to offer visit the Redcliffe City Council website.
