New Zealand is certainly a land of contrasts ... from Middle Earth, the home of Elves and Hobbits ...

If this valley doesn't look like the sort of place to find Elves, I don't know where else you'd look! (Between Thames and Whangamata)
The mountains are all so new, not like older islands where time has worn away the layers ...
And the water is absolutely crystal clear ... the blueness comes from all the air bubbles in the water. (Huka Falls at Lake Taupo)
Between 32 and 270 cubic metres of water per second flows over these falls!

To Middle Earth -- home of the Orcs!

"Double, double toil and trouble, fire burn and cauldron bubble!" (The aptly named Hell's Gate outside Rotorua)
Wasteland ...
Even the local parks are bubbling away in Rotorua

Everywhere you turn, you come across hot springs, snow-capped mountains ...

A hot waterfall feeding into the icy-cold river at Taupo
That icy-cold river I mentioned ... the canoes belong to teachers supervising a group of school students who'd been rafting down the river on truck tyres. They'd all just thawed out under the waterfall. Not a bad school excursion!
This is why it's cold ... looking across Lake Taupo to the snow-capped mountains ... and this was May (autumn in this part of the world!)

And then there's the Bay of Islands ... Heaven on a Stick!

Boats around the little Bayside town of Paihia
The Jetty at Paihia
You can see how the Bay of Islands got its name ...
Bet you can't guess why this is called the Hole in the Rock!

And remember all the tales I've told you about our Kiwi cousins and their penchant for hurling themselves off tall buildings?

This is the Sky Tower from which mad people tether themselves to a rope and leap ... (One of the many photos taken from the car window ...)
Another quiz: Why is Auckland called the City of Sails? Ummm ...
