Everybody Needs a Helping HandWe saw earlier photos of a koala coming up onto a verandah for a cool drink ... it seems it wasn't alone in feeling the need for a drink. I received these photos from friends on the NSW far south coast and in Victoria. The February 2009 bushfires have had a devastating affect on slow-moving koalas -- fire-fighters told how the koalas were dropping out of the trees into their arms as they were trying to put out the fires. The photo below shows how we're all in this together ... and hand-in-hand we must help each other. You can help injured and homeless wildlife by visiting the Zoos of Victoria website.
CFA (Country Fire Authority) volunteer, David
Tree, said they were driving back from a fire when he saw the koala on the
side of the road and said he couldn't just drive on and leave it there. So
they stopped and he went over to the koala, bent down and he said it just
looked up at him as if to say "I'm beat."
He got some water and put it in his hand and
offered it, but the
koala instead reached up for the bottle, then put its paw in his hand and left it
there. The CFA man said it was probably because the koala had been burnt and
his own hand was cool from the water.
He mentioned that people always thought that
koalas never drank water but got all their needs from leaves ... but we've
seen so many photos lately of them drinking ... it must be the heat.
Even in places where the fires have (thankfully) not reached, the koalas are desperate for a drink. These photos were taken by riders out for a bit of exercise. Sometimes you just have to stop and ask for help ...
And it's good to share a drink with friends ...
You'll find more photos of how our native fauna cope with the heat and how koalas find water. (Photos received via email. Source unknown.)
