Gray Matters

Feature column for the April edition of "Gray Matters" (the quarterly publication of the Saskatchewan Seniors Mechanism).  This has a circulation of about 15,000 copies throughout the province.

SURFING THE WEB

When it comes to the physical side of “Active Living”, the practice of sitting in front of a computer screen or a Video Lottery Terminal for hours on end doesn’t rate very high. Both situations involve one in a quest for hidden treasure. Both come with certain risks. One risk shared by both computer and V.L.T. is the loss of social contact. Whenever the eyes are glued firmly to either kind of screen, the rest of the world is behind your back.

The “treasures” associated with prudent use of the computer are the oppor-tunities to learn about many things and to communicate instantly with friends and family anywhere in the world. In a way, this can help compensate for the reduced direct social interaction. The risk is the waste of time associated with sorting through all the crudity, scams and spam that flood in to one’s “in” basket.

The “treasure” associated with the V.L.T. is the remote hope of instant wealth. The risks involve not only the wasted time but the actual cost in dollars and the increasing potential for dependency and financial disaster. True, there can be opportunities for social interaction during Casino tours and nights out-on-the-town with friends, but the ice is pretty thin.

One major difference between the V.L.T. and surfing is that friends can help you pick winners on the web. The intent behind his new feature in Gray Matters is to help surfers find their way to useful and interesting sites that will help seniors learn and grow. The “learning” can lead to better health, increased safety and new friends with similar interests. The “growing” can enrich life and expand ones range of activities.

To begin with, here’s a web-site that will be of great interest to anyone who enjoys reading and/or writing. It features a weekly newsletter, “The Write Way”, a wonderful collection of humour, grammar lessons, challenging word quizzes and creative concepts. Published every Friday by a retired teacher living in Australia, it bounces across the International Date Line and arrives at your computer every Thursday. Talk about your prompt delivery!!! You can subscribe to “The Write Way” simply by contacting: mailto:WritingTips-subscribe@yahoogroups.com

There is a “voluntary” subscription fee associated with this publication ... but the publication is well worth the cost. You will also find that a variety of special courses in writing are available from the same source at reasonable prices. If you like to bask in the warmth and wonder of words, you’ll find “The Write Way” to be a genuine treasure.
