Relevance - despite what you may think when you first look at the question, you're not being asked to "write whatever you know about X." There are always clearly defined topics your essay must address, and I'll make sure you focus on these. Coherence - it's easy to see what you want to see when you write. You know what you mean to write, but when it comes to expressing all this in words ... sometimes it comes out as nothing more than a jumbled list of unrelated points. I check that your writing is readable and compelling as well as logically organised. Flow - every idea and point in an essay should flow logically and smoothly into the next. I check your work for the effective use of topic sentences, for abrupt changes in thought, theme or setting and for the lack of links between ideas and paragraphs. Tone - while an essay is a formal piece of writing, it shouldn't be dull. You need to incorporate all the aspects of good writing to keep your reader involved and interested in your argument/discussion. Voice - I'll edit out any problem areas in your essay, but I won't remove your personal voice. These will still be your words and your ideas ... maybe just changed a little! Technicalities (spelling, grammar and punctuation) - you are writing an essay for an educated audience (your teacher, tutor, professor etc) so you're expected to know the rules of your language. This means that your grammar, spelling and punctuation have to be correct. I'll edit out any technical errors in your essay. Note: there are always subtle differences in House Style e.g. some schools use the serial comma, others don't. Let me know when you send me your essay, and I'll edit it to suit the appropriate style.
