Books about the Big Picture

Here are some of the books in my collection that I think of as my Big Picture Books ... because they help my little grey cells try to come to grips with the Big Picture.

Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance

Robert M Pirsig's classic "literary chautauqua, a novel that is meant to both entertain and edify."

I read this the year after my darling Dad died, and it helped me to come to terms with my sense of loss and to start to embrace the Big Picture ... Definitely worth a place on every bookshelf!

Cosmos is one of the classics of science-for-the-people books. Sagan's enthusiasm and fascination for all things scientific is infectious, and while a lot of the science in this book is somewhat dated, it's still a great read.
Billions & Billions - Thoughts on Life and Death at the Brink of the Millennium

Published posthumously, this book contains a series of essays by Sagan that touches on topics as varied as the invention of chess, life on Mars, global warming, abortion, international affairs, the nature of government and the meaning of morality.

"In the Valley of the Shadow" is his final chapter where he addresses his struggle with myelodysplasia, using the same matter-of-fact style he used throughout his career to present the complex workings of the Universe in a way the rest of us could understand.

  Climbing Mount Improbable

If you've ever had difficulty understanding how complex life forms have evolved from single-celled organisms, this book is just what you've been looking for. Dawkins explains in simple terms how and why evolution works!

The Illustrated Brief History of Time

Another of those classics that belong in every library ...

While Hawking takes a bit more work, the results are worth it ... and this edition has pictures!

The Ancestor's Tale The Ancestor's Tale by Professor Richard Dawkins

Travel back in time to find our ancestors ...

The Selfish Gene

by Richard Dawkins

An exploration of  ... just about everything!

The Mind of God - The Scientific Basis for a Rational World

Aussie physicist, Paul Davies, asks the Big Questions: How did it all start? Why is there a universe at all? Is there a God? Could the laws of physics have been different? Who made the laws? Why are we here? Could there be a universe devoid of life? And more ...

Another book to get those little grey cells working!

And more books about science ...
